I realized that I had a stockpile of Amazon gift certificates equal to half a month's rent that I couldn't actually spend on rent, so I decided to spend them on the next best thing: Star Wars Armada, the fleet-battle equivalent of the X-Wing miniatures tabletop game.

Anyone else play? I know that Nammy has done some X-Wing.

I actually just caught up on the releases for that game.

I love it.

But I haven't had a chance to play in forever.

How would you characterize its play compared to X-Wing?

It's a lot slower. A game of X-Wing can take 30-60 minutes, but a game of Armada is easily 90-120. Armada is also a lot less about anticipation and mind reading. There is still an aspect of programming in commands, but it's more for min-maxing as opposed to blowing or winning the game. Movement in Armada is much more forgiving, you just take turns, and you can fiddle with the movement track until you are satisfied with where you end up. Firing is also much more forgiving, every ship has a 360 firing arc, although some parts of that arc are more powerful than others. In general the ships grind up against each other more, and it feels like a war of attrition. I also find luck plays less of an element. Only the attacker rolls dice, and the outcome of those rolls feel more consistent. The defender just has a battery of defensive abilities they need to manage over the course of the turn. So you aren't going to have the X-Wing thing happen where one guy rolls nothing but hits, the other guy rolls nothing but blanks, and after 2 or 3 turns the game is over and it sucks and delay THIS SHIT.

Ahem.

It's a very different game from X-Wing and I think it captures the feel of Star Wars capital ship combat. The same way the fighter battles were basically WW1 era dogfights, the capital ship battles are basically Age of Sail era naval engagements.

Very cool. I think that's more my speed. Thanks for the insight!

Weren't you asking about Twilight Struggle once upon a time? How'd that ever go?

My daughter's recently become obsessed with Attack Wing --- which is X-Wing except it has D&D monsters instead of Star Wars space ships.

She's convinced that I am obligated to buy her all the metallic dragons and maybe one or two of the chromatic ones. Entirely on the grounds that she asked.

Fucking miniatures games, dude. I can't afford them AND keyboards.

I'm surprised you can afford kids and keyboards.
